Spicy mince and vegetable sishebo

Now that winter has arrived, a delicious, hearty sishebo is exactly the kind of dinner everyone wants. Warm and spicy, this recipe is sure to please even the fussiest of taste buds and will fill hungry tummies with delightful tastes and aromas.

A reliable spicy mince and vegetable stew recipe can often be hard to find. However, the one below is an old family recipe that has been tried and trusted by many generations. It’s fairly simple to prepare and cooks quickly as well, which we all know is a major plus on cold winter nights.

Ingredients:

1 medium onion, diced

1 punnet of baby marrows, chopped

200g of green beans, topped and tailed

3 medium potatoes, peeled and chopped

500g lean beef mince

1 cube of beef stock

2 tablespoons of mild curry powder

275ml water

A little bit of oil

Salt and pepper to taste

Method:

1.)    Heat the oil in a pot and then brown the onion. Once this is done, add the mince.

2.)    Brown the mince and make sure that any big clumps of meat are broken up.

3.)    Add the water, stock and vegetables and allow simmering for about five minutes.

4.)    Reduce the heat and cover the mixture. Allow a further 15 minutes of simmering, stirring occasionally.

5.)    Add salt and pepper to taste and allow the curry to stand for a few minutes before serving.

Serve hearty portions with brown/white rice or vetkoek.
